Abstract
Introduction
Although CT scans are of crucial importance in modern radiological departments and highly valued due to the diagnostic yields they provide, CT scout views, which are obtained beforehand in order to define the field of view (FOV) of the following CT scan, are not necessarily routinely reviewed. However, there are studies that claim CT scout views can be put to better use than they currently are by exploring a number of different useful fields of application, such as locating pathological findings outside of the FOV of the axial slides and limiting radiation exposure by implementing various approaches. This study aims to improve the image quality of CT scout views in order to encourage their implementation into radiological review and to increase their diagnostic value.
Methods and materials
This study included scout views captured with tube voltages set to 80 kV, 100 kV and 120 kV which depict one of three regions: thorax, abdomen or thorax and abdomen. It is standard procedure to apply a so-called kernel to the scout view to reduce its file size and improve its image quality via reconstruction of the raw data. In this study, three different kernels were used for the reconstruction of each scout view. For each of the three regions, a score was created in order to rate the image quality. Furthermore, identifiability of foreign bodies (if present) was scored independently and the scout views were examined to investigate if pathological findings confirmed by the respective CT images could be located. Another score was employed to objectify the results.
Results
Both the applied tube voltage and the kernel used for reconstruction of the scout view show a statistically significant influence on the resulting image quality. The extent of said influences differs with regard to the depicted region and the anatomical structure examined, however, the combination of an applied voltage of 120 kV and reconstruction of the scout view using the kernel T20 yielded the best results in most cases. The assessment of identifiability of foreign bodies showed excellent results. In contrast, pathological findings diagnosed via the respective CT-slides were not adequately displayed on the scout views in most cases.
Discussion and conclusion
CT scout views are often underestimated due to their limited diagnostic value (in comparison to the corresponding CT data). However, they contain additional, diagnostically useful information and reviewing them provides potential to complement radiological diagnoses. Enhancing the image quality of CT scout views could likely prove helpful to exploit aforementioned potential more effectively and further the recognition of scout views as a valuable source of additional diagnostically relevant information.
