Abstract

The present study examines the syntactic structures of spoken German and their usage in monologically structured youtube videos created by adolescents and young adults, such as youtube vlogs and haul videos. The aim of the analysis is to identify context-specific syntactic patterns and analyze their pragmatic functions within these videos. Additionally, the study assesses to what extent existing syntactic descriptive categories of spoken language, particularly those found in the Dudengrammatik, are suitable for accurately describing the syntactic phenomena observed in monologic youtube videos. The empirical basis of this study is the analysis of 20 video clips published by native German speakers between the ages of 14 and 24 on youtube between 2016 and 2018. These videos are transcribed according to the cGAT conventions and coded using the MAXQDA software. The most frequently occurring syntactic structures and their pragmatic functions are then analyzed based on authentic examples. The results indicate that the examined youtube videos are heavily characterized by spoken language syntax. Despite their monologic format, youtubers often simulate face-to-face communication by using syntactic constructions typical of spoken language to create a lively and interactive atmosphere. Overall, the applicability of the Dudengrammatik to this communicative context is assessed as largely appropriate, though some challenges remain in specific areas.
