Abstract

The aim of this dissertation is to examine pharmacotherapy in patients with a confirmed diagnosis of fibromyalgia who were treated within the framework of the Systemic Extinction Training (SET) study (Thieme et al., 2019). The therapeutic principle of Systemic Extinction Training (SET) is based on the pathophysiology of altered central pain perception in patients with fibromyalgia. Through cardiac-triggered electrical stimulation, desensitization of pain perception is achieved, resulting in an increased pain threshold. Consequently, a reduction in pain and associated symptoms is accomplished within the patient cohort. We were able to demonstrate a significant long-term reduction in analgesic intake following SET therapy compared to the control groups in patients with fibromyalgia. Accordingly, SET therapy appears to represent a meaningful alternative treatment option for the investigated patient population.
