Abstract

This dissertation examines the relationship between key competencies (Schlüsselkompetenzen)—including Future Skills concepts—and the objectives of university education, which have been subject to controversial debate in the German scholarly discourse since the Bologna reforms. Although the discourse on key competencies dates back five decades to the 1970s, the educational value (Bildungswert) of both key competencies and Future Skills (as their successor concept), remains insufficiently explored in the context of higher education. Through an extensive hermeneutic analysis of educational policy papers and academic publications in higher education research, central terms such as Bildung, competence, university education, key competencies, and Future Skills (including their interrelationships) are defined. On this basis, a contemporary humanist theory of higher education is developed, which identifies "scientifically reflected and autonomous action" (mündiges Handeln) as the central goal of university education - a goal to which key competencies can make a significant contribution. In this framework, the concepts of Bildung and competence do not constitute inherent opposites but are constructively related to one another. Consequently, these findings call for a stronger emphasis on the philosophy of education as a guiding discipline, providing a necessary counterpart to empirical research in the field of higher education research.
