Abstract

Digitalization is everywhere these days, however it is usually reduced to a technology-centric perspective. In fact, digitalization should be understood as a phenomenon with far-reaching effects, which is accompanied by a completely new complexity, new requirements, perspectives and ways of thinking. In direct correlation with the multifaceted phenomenon of digitalization, a variety of influences can be observed, particularly on knowledge-intensive collaborations and thus knowledge dynamics in projects. One of the main developments is the increasing requirement to link and combine a wide variety of knowledge across functions, disciplines, departments and industries in a systematic manner. At the same time, there is an increasing interconnectedness of systems, actors and sectors that influence each other. To date, however, discussions on this have only taken place in an unconnected manner and within disciplines. In order to understand and analyse the effects of the digitalization in greater depth, it is necessary to consider processes, functions and levels in their interconnectedness. At this point, this thesis approaches the described changes from the considered disciplines in a systemic way in the sense of a (project-) ecosystem to visualize and examine dynamic interactions and connections. Since there is no common understanding of the individual levels of observation between the disciplines in this context, the differentiation between micro (individual-) and macro (organizational-) levels, which is common in knowledge research, serves as a starting point. So as to enable consideration of these dynamic relationships across all the observation levels, an additional meso (project-) level was developed on the basis of these two levels and an overarching landscape or context level was defined and theoretically founded. Anchored in a systemic approach, this thesis derives a multi-level model that specifically interconnects the observation levels within the (project) ecosystem, among others as part of the empirical study. The developed model allows cross-level processes and interactions to be visualized and to examine these, for example, with regard to direct or indirect interdependencies with other processes, actors, areas or levels. Furthermore, it offers the possibility of adopting different perspectives (e.g. in terms of individual actors or specific roles) and therefore to make the individual embedding within the surrounding framework as well as the associated requirements transparent. The developed model can be seen as an observation / explanation model and as an analytical framework for both science and practical application.
