Abstract

The enzyme pyrroline-5-carboxylate-reductase, which catalizes the last step in the synthesis of proline was identified as a potential marker for colorectal cancer by using proteomics-technologies on 23 resected specimens of colorectal cancer. Then the developed antibody was used for immunohistochemical detection of the enzym in colorectal cancer tissues as well as in adenomas of the colon and extraintestinal tumors. The antibody was able to detect the enzyme but the detection was not specific for colorectal cancer. In principle a higher expression of the enzyme associated with a higher staining level was fund in dysplastic or neoplastic tissues than in normal tissues of the ame origin. A benefit for the treatment of colorectal cancer could not be shown.
