Theodor Koch-Grünberg und die Produktion von Wissenschaft. Eine Ausstellung in der Sozial- und Kulturanthropologie

Abstract

The explorer Theodor Koch from Grünberg in Hesse travelled from Roraima to the Orinoco in present-day Brazil and Venezuela in 1911-13.He collected a wealth of material on the indigenous groups he visited in Amazonia. His scientific legacy has been in the Ethnographic Collection of the Philipps University since 1999. The exhibition thematises Koch-Grünberg's travel destinations, data collection and forms of documentation and places his ethnographic research in the context of his time. It shows the ways of production of science and at the same time addresses the then prevailing colonial conditions.
