Abstract

After almost 500 years of university history, the University of Marburg - and with it the commitment of Marburg students - is (once again) in a phase of discovery due to a changing situation. Also because studying itself is constantly changing. Universities are struggling with the consequences of changing conditions while they are expected to qualify an ever-increasing number of people. The proportion of students in the overall population is growing. A low level of participation among students is being met with a differentiation of the student body and confusing opportunities for participation. The latter will even be partially dismantled, making it more difficult for some students to participate in decision-making. At the same time, the long-observed change in political culture is having an impact on students' participation behavior. As part of an explorative case study, the elections to the Marburg student parliament are examined using various sources such as aggregate and individual data. A specially created survey is also used. The exploration is carried out in several intermediate stages. The description of the institutional framework is followed by fundamental theoretical and methodological considerations. The results of the empirical analysis are then presented. On the one hand, the study looks at differences between non-voters and voters, on the other hand, it deals with the specific voting decisions of the latter. The results correspond with previous research findings, as will be shown in the course of the work. Hypotheses are formulated on the basis of the results. It can be shown that socio-demographic aspects and political attitudes differ between voters and non-voters or within the group of voters. In addition, locally specific developments can be used to show that structural changes or the specific design of elections can also influence electoral dynamics. The attitude-related findings of the exploration generally refer to the election year 2023. Only the data from the election statistics provide the basis for identifying some differences as possible constants. The explorative case study primarily fills parts of a research gap that still exists by providing an insight into the (Marburg) university elections.
