Abstract

Reconciliation typically refers to initiating and nurturing positive relationships between conflict parties. We give an introduction to the structural, relational, and identity-based levels of reconciliation and discuss how reconciliation relates to forgiveness and reparations. The focus of this chapter is on the identity-based perspective, including the presentation of the needs-based model of reconciliation. The chapter ends with examples of practical interventions in the service of reconciliation which illustrate that the most promising approaches to reconciliation combine the different levels (structural, relational and identity-level) of reconciliation.
