Abstract

Evidence indicates that ineffective recovery processes contribute to the explanation of stress related diseases. In this study the Health Action Process Approach (HAPA), a social-cognitive model, was used to predict recovery as a health behavior. A positive relation between recovery activities and recovery experiences was predicted. According to the HAPA it was expected that self-efficacy and planning have positive impact on recovery activities, whereas recovery experiences were expected to be negatively related to symptoms of depression and poor sleep quality. The results revealed practical implications for individual optimization of recovery processes. Suggestions for future research on specific recovery processes and their effects on individual health and performance are discussed.
