Abstract
Aim of the study:
Main objective of this preclinical in vitro study was to investigate dentin bond strength of the amalgam replacement material Cention Forte (Ivoclar Vivadent, Schaan, Liechtenstein) in combination with the adhesive systems Cention Primer and Adhese Universal (both Ivoclar Vivadent, Schaan, Liechtenstein) in a high C-factor setting.
Materials and methods:
Class-I cavities were prepared in 48 caries-free human third molars. Teeth were randomly assigned to six experimental groups and two control groups (n=6). In the experimental groups, Cention Forte was applied in one-, two- and three separate layers. Cention Primer was used as adhesive in three experimental groups and Adhese Universal in the others. Venus Diamond (Kulzer Dental, Hanau, Germany) was used as restorative material in the control groups, Syntac (Ivoclar Vivadent) in control group 1, and G- Premio Bond (GC, Leuven, Belgien) as adhesive system in control group 2. To test bond strength, teeth were cut into beams with a cross-section of 1 square millimetre, which were subjected to a μTBS test. The fracture surface analysis was carried out with a scanning electron microscope (SEM).
Results:
Cention Forte in combination with Cention Primer provides comparable values in the single (bulk fill) and multi-layer technique when applied as per manufacturer’s recommendations (9.1-10.6 MPa). Using Adhese Universal, values of 8.2 MPa were achieved with one layer of Cention Forte and 9.1 MPa with two layers. Significantly lower dentin bond strength (6.7 MPa) resulted from three layers having been applied (p<0.05). The lowest bond strengths in this study were found in the two control groups (p<0.05) with 4.0 MPa in K1 and 1.8 MPa in K2. Pre-test failures were recorded only in control groups with a 10 % in K1 and 51 % in K2.
Conclusions:
The present study showed that Cention Forte in combination with the two universal adhesives used was able to achieve promising bond strengths to dentin, with Cention Primer performing better overall. The layering technique, whether bulk-fill or multi- layer, does not seem to have a significant influence on dentin bonding in high c-factor cavities.
