This thesis comprises the development and characterisation of new stationary phases for the separation of carbohydrates with ion chromatography and electrochemical detection. The support particles were highly crosslinked PS-DVB-resins. Chloromethylation, coating and grafting techniques were used to introduce functional groups to the surface of the support particles. These lead to stable anion exchanger materials with high capacity for the separation of carbohydrates after functionalisation with different amines and diamines. The well known concept of agglomerated ion exchangers was advanced and enhanced by the immobilisation of polycationic chains of so called ionenes. The high availability of monomers applicable for ionene synthesis enables easy access to a wide variety of structures. The produced ion exchangers were suitable for the separation of carbohydrates. The chromatographic results of all resins were deliberated on aspects of applicability for the separation of carbohydrates.
