Abstract

In recent years, light curable composites have become more important as dental restorative materials than silver amalgam. Despite all the advantages, composite fillings are tending to create gap formation, which results from polymerization shrinkage of the composites. To improve the adaptation to dentin, more progressive adhesive techniques were developed. Due to improve adaptation, there has been greater stress at the cavity walls as a result of the shrinking forces. For this reason we need to develop methods that enable us to observe the development of stress. The aim of this study was to visualise the stress, generated by polymerization shrinkage, in the material of a model-cavity by a photo-elastic method. Cavities of a realistic volume were prepared in photoactive resin and were examined by red circular polarized light (long wave). The composite was cured by blue light (short wave). So it should be possible to compare the mechanical stress in the model-cavity-material induced by different filling methods. The results show the highest stress levels in the bulk-technique. The stress induced by incremental polymerization was less in comparison to the bulk-technique. The use of a new, small volume light-insert, placed into the bulk restoration, reduced the levels of stress. This new method produces equivalent results to the incremental procedure. The photo-elastic method allowed a comparison of stress levels in the cavity material, which was induced by different filling- and processing-techniques. The introduced method passes the first application test successfully and shows a promising method for further optimisation of well known and new filling techniques.
