Squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck is a common neoplastic disease in central Europe. Distant metastases are most commonly found in the lungs followed by bones and liver. Cutaneous metastases are exceptional with only few cases reported in the literature. Objective of this study is to evaluate incidence, sites and prognostic significance of skin metastases of squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck as well as the effect of the most common treatment modalities. Therefore the data of 51 patients was analyzed, who developed cutaneous metastases of HNSCC. We found skin metastases in 2,95% of the patients. A majority of the lesions was localized in the skin of the head, neck and chest. Skin metastasis below the diaphragm was extremely rare. Skin metastases indicate a poor prognosis. The efficacy of current treatment modalities is limited.
