Abstract

There are many changes in the development of brain tumour classification and the nomenclature of neurooncologic. The most tumours in intracranial space descend from glia cells. The term "glioma" is from Rudolf Virchow in the year 1863. He differentiates glioma from sarcoma. German and Spanish explorers like Weigert, Kölliker, Andriezen, Ramon y Cajal and Del Rio Hortega described astrocytes, macroglia and microglia. The last two elements were discovered from the Spanish reasearchers. The third element "oligodendroglia" has received its name by Del Rio Hortega. He also published his knowledge about the oligodendroglia in 1921. This stage of knowledge is the basics for the classification of the neurogenic tumours.
