Abstract

Aim of this dissertation is to integrate the hessian princely physicians of Landgrave Wilhelm IV. and Moritz the Learned in their social role in the (medical) historic context. Having regard to early modern times as a time of change in the theory of medicine first the biographies of the sovereigns were looked at under three aspects: their approach to medicine as a science, their contribution to medical legislation and their personal experience as patients. Subsequently the princely physicians were investigated in matters of their specific role at court and their medical practice and the findings were illustrated on the basis of three biographies which can be regarded as typical. More chapters treat of the medical act which was enacted by Moritz the Learned in 1616 and of the medical faculty of Marburg university as a bigger part of the physicians were professors in Marburg before or at the same time with their engagement at court.
