Abstract

This thesis outlines the basis of a method for measuring the spatial dimensions of the temporal bone’s inner structures (e.g. the cochlea or the labyrinth) by means of Digital Volume Tomography (DVT) imaging. Temporal bones of ancient egyptian mummy specimens and "modern" crania were scanned and radiologically examined for pathologies or artefacts. The inner structures were measured and comparisons between the mummy group and the "modern" temporal bone group were performed. The described way of measurement offers some advantages over CT measurement and could, if developed further, prospectively assist the diagnostics of pathologies as well as pre- and postoperative assessment in the clinical routine.
