This work is primarily dedicated to the synthesis of numerous tri- and tetradentate N,O-chelating ligands which should be capable to coordinate manganese in different oxidation states and to form stable complexes. These ligands should be stable in aqueous solution over a wide range of possible pH-values and should resist oxidative decomposition. These requirements are based on the objective target to use the resulting complexes as bleach-catalysts for the activation of the low-cost oxidizing agent hydrogen peroxide in laundry detergents. Furthermore these complexes should be compatible with all other typical ingredients of the detergent. Laying the focus on manganese as redox-catalytic centre is a consequence of its ability to form a variety of stable compounds and to show high activities in bleaching systems. Additional to that manganese provides the benefit to be non-toxic and that manganese-complexes are already known in activation of hydrogen peroxide (Chap. 3.3). The suitability of the synthesized complexes for usage in laundry detergents is finally tested under standardized conditions at HENKEL.
