Abstract
In analogy to the transition metals carbon atoms can be stabilized by σ-donor ligands. The bonding analysis of such molecules and the calculated reactivities toward Lewis acids show that these molecules have two lone pairs at the carbon atom and thus react as double Lewis bases. The bonding description can be extended to the corresponding silicon, germanium, tin and lead compounds and their analogs of the group 15.
The calculated properties strongly depend on the ligands and show that the transitions between carbones, carbenes and heterocumulenes are smooth.
