Abstract

The dissertation descirbes the ongoing process of legitimation of popmusic. The empirical material is the feuilletion of the german weekly newspaper “Die Zeit”. Oriented on the dicourseanalysis by jäger the feuilleton is analysed in an quantitative and qualitative approach. In the quantitative analysis a sudden increase of articles concerning pop-themes after 2000 is worked out as characteristic. The qualitiative analysis deals with the question if and how articles about classical and popular music are different. The empirical results are integrated in a three-level model of legitime arts. Following this model, legitimation is produced on the level mass (number of a aesthetical practice), class (who takes part at a certain aesthetical practice) and discourse (speaking about art). It is pointed out, that not the categories “classical” and “popular” themselves are erased in this process of legitimation of pop. Furthermore these categories are no longer arranged in a hierarchical way, but are located equaly beneath each other.
