Abstract

In my dissertation on "Femina sacra - a continuum of patriarchal violence" I present three types of bride abduction in Georgia: involuntary or violent abduction, abduction by deception and planned abduction. I argue that bride kidnapping is accepted in order to comply with social and traditional values that require gender-specific behaviour on the part of women and of men. Women are expected to be modest and shy and to conform to moral standards, while men are supposed to demonstrate their masculinity, strength and power in form of confident appearance in public. In the case of violent kidnapping, which is in itself an unlawful act, “normality and order” are considered to be restored as soon as the abductor has officially married the abductee, her consent not being asked. Thus, this illegal act of bride kidnapping can be transferred into a legal framework of marriage. Thereby these traditional patriarchal values reinforce the hegemonic power structure in Georgian society. In these power structures, the position of a woman is a subordinate one and violent bride kidnapping is thus made possible. By applying Giorgio Agamben's concept of homo sacer, I complete my thesis with a critical, i.e. feminist view based on concept of the femina sacra. I argue that the bodies (and behaviour) of women in patriarchal Georgian society are subject to objectification mechanisms that degrade women’s rights to a minimum and thus make possible physical and psychological violence in the context of forced bride kidnapping. Agamben's concept and the expansion of his work by feminist scholars to the figure femina sacra show to what extent a person, actually endowed with civil rights and obligations, can be degraded to a person whose civic rights are curtailed and restricted. And it is this degradation that affects women in Georgian society who are threatened by or who already have experienced violent kidnapping. They are denied all opportunity to observe their legal rights and duties (human and women's rights). Through the figure of the femina sacra, the focus is directed to structural connections of patriarchal power mechanisms, which find their expression in physical and psychological violence against women.
