Abstract
Introduction: The aim of this study was to examine if the three-bottle adhesive system Syntac® (Ivoclar Vivadent AG) combined with an additional dental silane (Monobond® Plus, Ivoclar Vivadent AG) has an impact on the dentine-composite-bond.
Method: 54 extracted, unfilled, caries- free human third molars were used for the experiment. The teeth have been distributed randomly to eighteen test groups; each test group is to make three samples. First it is necessary to prepare a class-I-cavity, which cavity floor is completely in the dentin. The cavity was closed by using the EcuSphere®-Komposit (DMG), the dental adhesive system Syntac and by using the dental silane Monobond Plus in a group-specific and defined scheme. The teeth were sawed vertically and horizontally into small sticks with a water-cooled diamond saw. The test bodies had to undergo a micro-pull-strength test in a universal testing machine (Microtensile MTD-500 Plus, SD Mechatronik GmbH, Feldkirchen-Westerham). The results for each group were
statistically evaluated by using the SPSS 14.0 software (SPSS Inc., Chicago, Illinois, USA). In the end the composite-dentin interface was examined and graded by using a scanning electron microscope. (REM Phenom, Phenom-World BV, Eindhoven, Niederlande)
Results: It is shown that an additional dental silane has a negative impact on the dentincomposite-bond by using the adhesive system Syntac. The silane Monobond Plus was used in the design Syntac etch-and-rinse (EAR) as well as Syntac self-etch (SE). The results show that all determined values of both experimental groups with Syntac EAR and Syntac SE were significantly lower (p <0.05) than the mean of Syntac EAR (38.5 MPa) and Syntac SE (16.9 MPa). As a consequence the use of an additional silane does not improve the bond strength between composite and dentine.
