With the European Media Freedom Act the EU is responding to corresponding problem areas in member states such as Hungary, Bulgaria and Greece. Large parts of this innovative legislation have been in effect since August 8, 2025. The EMFA addresses a wide range of issues. Accordingly, the spectrum of questions examined is broad:
• Is the EU even competent in this area?
• Does the EMFA protect against measures taken on grounds of national security?
• Are there consequences for public service media?
• Does the EU fall short in its transparency requirements?
• Does the EMFA now ensure "internal media freedom"?
• Are the state media authorities in Germany truly independent of politics?
• What role will the " European Board for Media Services" play?
• Will the stalemate regarding German media concentration law continue despite the EMFA?
