Abstract

To find out how often relevant hypoxemia can be found after generel anesthesia we arranged a data analysis including 960 surgical patients. It was a prospective, observational study and we screened for independent risk factors for postoperative hypoxemia (SpO2<90%). The incidence of hypoxemia was 17% (95%CI: 14.7% - 19.5%).A significant influence on postoperative hypoxemia was detected for pre-induction SpO2, age, BMI, inflating pressure, opioid-equivalent, NMBA- equivalent and N2O use. In unselected collectives the perioperative anesthesiological efforts show less impact in preventing hypoxemia. Clinical alertness seems to be the only way to moderate the incidence of hypoxemia.
