The pseudoanionic polymerization of styrene initiated by s-BuLi in cyclohexane was performed under continuous flow conditions in a microreactor and studied with respect to kinetics of reaction. Styrene conversion of 95% was accomplished at a residence time of 3 minutes and a reaction temperature of 50°C. Polystyrene with Mw / Mn = 1.14 was obtained. Also the depending of monomer concentration and mixer systems (LH 25 (Ehrfeld AG) and t-shape) on the obtained polymer proprieties were studied. Factors, which are limiting the application of microreactor techniques for anionic living polymerization, are pointed out. Long term studies were carried out to investigate if microreaction techniques are suited for continues flow systems.
