Abstract

Within our society being influenced by physical inactivity the prevalence of chronical diseases increases more and more. Many studies underline the evidence for the importance of regular physical activity in primary and secondary prevention. Considering these facts a computer based tailoring system was developed by a team of scientists from different disciplines. After that the acceptance of the CBCS (computer-based counselling system) used by chronically ill patients with coronary heart disease and/or diabetes mellitus was analysed. To create the usability of the programme for a predominantly older target group the new counselling system was installed on tablet-PCs to be used with a stick or a sensitive screen. The surface as well as the navigation of the programme was easy to comprehend, clearly arranged and user-friendly. The content of the counselling system was presented on the basis of the Transtheoretical-Model of Behavioral-Changing, depending on the individual phase of the patients. The information, being presented in small parts, were multimedia-based, conversational and interactive. So an individual counselling could be guaranteed. The pilot-study, designed in pre-post-style, was tested on a target group of older chronically ill patients with coronary heart disease and/or diabetes mellitus. This was done in five different general practices. The patients were selected by a random examination. The user-acceptance concerning the usability was analyzed by using a questionnaire. The result was predominantly very positive, though, at the same time, the patients weren´t familiar with using a pc. The result was verified by an interview of 29 patients. Furthermore acceptance-indicators were identified to optimize the system. CBCS can be seen as an important subcomponent within health counselling in primary care. It offers a cost-efficient possibility to counsel many patients having low personnel costs and a high identification of the target group at the same time. We could show that computer-based tailoring in health-counselling and prevention in primary care offer a promising chance worth being enhanced.
