Abstract

When we use the word "reality" in everyday language, we may know roughly what we are talking about. know roughly what we are talking about, because we limit ourselves to a minimum consensus. consensus, but universal knowledge or even a uniform, all-encompassing definition seems difficult to achieve, all-embracing definition seems to be difficult to grasp with this so far-reaching term. difficult to grasp. We would perhaps generally settle on the definition of "that which is there. "1 for reality, but we realise that these four words are far too short to do justice to the scope of this term. to do justice to the scope of this concept - just consider, for example, the problematic case of fiction. the problem of fiction: is what is written in a novel real or not? not? To what extent is fiction in general, that is, does it exist?2 Does fiction have to be written down in order to exist, or does it exist? written down in order to exist, or does fiction exist even if it is merely in my thoughts? in my mind? What criteria do we have at all to make an adequate decision about this? to make an adequate decision about it? Particularly since the advent of the scientific age with its revolutionary technical revolutionary technical innovations that allow us to perceive the reality we have access to in a reality accessible to us (for example, by using technical instruments as sensory aids). instruments as sensory aids to help us perceive something that our own senses initially our own senses initially deny us), also make this short definition seem dubious. seem doubtful. For what is reality? What is there, or what we can perceive, or both? what we can perceive, or both?
