Abstract

Concentrating solar systems can provide a major part of the future power and heat demand. The technology of such systems is only one step away from the market introduction due to its competitive levelized electricity costs. The direct normal irradiance, the "solar fuel" of such plants, is one of the most important item which affects the capacity and gain of the power plant in a huge amount. Due to the high investment of such plants, information about the solar ressource has to be available today to assess the future economic performance. This work developes an operational tool, which calculates the hourly direct normal irradiance using a parameterization irradiance model. Therefore, infrared and visible data of the geostationary satellite Meteosat and atmospheric data of ozone, water vapor and aerosol are used. The hourly irradiance can be determined for large regions, countries or single sites within the field of view of Meteosat with a spatial resolution of 5km x 5km and for time series up to 20 years. This information about the available solar resource is very useful for planing and developing concentrating solar power plants and for solar resourcee assessment of regions.
