Abstract

About 5 to 10 per cent of the population suffer from peptic ulcer disease during their lives. The main risk factors are the bacterium helicobacter pylori and medication with nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (nsaids). In the 80`s and 90`s more than 90 per cent of duodenal ulcers and about 70 per cent of gastric ulcers were associated with helicobacter pylori. For this reason patients were regularly treated by an eradication of the bacterium. In the last years an increase of patients with peptic ulcers not associated with helicobacter pylori nor nsaids was reported. Our aim was to investigate the situation of peptic ulcer disease in a german university hospital: how many peptic ulcer are associated with helicobacter pylori and/ or nsaids and are there other risk factors?
