Abstract

The survey was made with two analytical groups. A cross sectional study was analyzed. consisting of 236 skulls, called „Marburger skull collection“. The data aequisition was made with a specific measuring shank. Furthermore a longitudinal study constisting of 1536 cephalometric lateral radiographs of dutch children was analyzed. Results The position of the palatal plane in relation to Basion ist lowered just 3 mm vertically during growth of the skull. This knowledge has influence on skelettal functional therapy, which utilizes the vertical growth of the maxillary bone. The raw data were interpolated and trigonometric calculations carried out an more accurate analysis of the growth of the palatal plane. There was a relation between the rotation of the palatal plane and the increase of the analyzed distance. Furthermore the interpolation made an indivudiual analyzis of the increased distance possible. This evaluation proccess can also be used for other growth analyses. The trigonometric calculations addicted that posterior nasal spine is more constant than anterior nasal spine. Anterior nasal spine can be remodeled even cranial. This increases the distance additionaly.
