Abstract
The sealing of posterior teeth using low-viscosity composites is an important preventiv method in dentistry. Different studies proofed their long-term effectivity in reducing occlusal caries. Anyway, despite a sealing there is always a persisting risk of recurrent or secundary caries for instance due to fissuring.
According to caries detection fluorescence based methods have become established. Especially in the diagnostic of non-cavitated carious (hidden cares) lesions these systems are gaining in importance. To what extend fluorescence spectroscopy systems like Diagnodent (KaVo) or the VistaCam iX (Dürr) are able to detect and document carious processes under sealing material might depend on opacity and wear oft the composit because of daily mastication. The less abrasion of the sealer influences fluorescence values, the better aforementioned systems allow indication of caries progression.
This in-vitro study examined effects on fluorescence maesurements due to daily abrasion of sealing material. Four groups were treated each with two unfilled and two filled opaque composits. The fifth group was sealed using a new nano-particle filled material (Voco). All teeth at least had initial carious lesions. Before sealing, after sealing and after artificial ageing fluorescence measurements were made with Diagnodent, Diagnodent Pen and Vista Cam iX. Comparison of them to the values of the beginning this process showed that nano-filled composits had the least influence on fluorescence in the treated groups. Furthermore within the framework of caries diagnostic it allows a long-term determination using laser diagnosting tools.
