Abstract

In course of time, catheters have become an integral part of the postoperative pain management within the meaning of regional anesthesia. Nevertheless, there are some risks and undesirable side effects while using them. One major problem is the colonization of the catheter itself or its tip with different types of bacteria. The colonization of the injection site is within the bounds of possibilities, too. These colonizations could give rise to local symptoms and in the end to an abortive removal of the catheter. Therefore, this study attempts to find out if a patch which is pretreated with an antimicrobial agent like chlorhexidinegluconate could reduce the bacterial colonization of the catheters used for regional anesthesia in the postoperative pain management. Furthermore, this study tries to figure out if this minimized bacterial colonization leads to a longer duration of the catheterization.
