Abstract

The use of the intra- aortic balloon pump (IABP) is a common procedure during modern heart surgery to improve patient outcome. Currently there is no definite statement in any guideline concerning the best moment to insert the device during patient treatment. Furthermore most of the research is about use of IABP in patients undergoing bypass surgery. The aim of this study is to make a contribution to the answer what the correct timing is to achieve the best outcome. For this reason several outcome parameters including 30- day mortality were evaluated regarding the early, the perioperative and the late implantation of the pump.
