Abstract
In this study 39 patients with pHPT and 22
patients with benign thyroid disease underwent psychiatric
ratings before and after parathyroid surgery.
The psychiatric
symptoms were evaluated using the Symptom-Checklist-90-Revised
(SCL-90-R), Becks Depression Inventary (BDI), Hamilton
Depression Scale (HAMD), Montgomery Asberg Depression Scale
(MADRS) and three measurements of cognition.
The
hyperparathyreoid group had preoperatively significantly higher
(p<0.05) levels of psychiatric symptoms. The factors for
anxiety, depression, and cognitive symptoms were the most
pronounced in the pHPT patients and were also decrease after
surgery.
