Urban Architecture in Ancient Berytus: An Architectural and Geospatial Analysis of Martyr’s Square

Abstract

This dissertation examines the urban architecture and development of Roman Berytus through geospatial reconstruction and network analysis of previously excavated but largely unpublished archaeological sites in the Eastern Quarter near Martyr's Square. Analyzing documentation from four sites covering approximately 15,000 sqm, the study employs spatial and street network analyses to reconstruct the city's urban grid to reveal a complex urban plan where modest street-facing shops coexisted with luxurious courtyard houses and private baths. By reconstructing architecture and street networks from archival excavation data rather than fieldwork, this research addresses critical knowledge gaps about Berytus during the 1st and 6th centuries AD, while advocating for renewed attention to the city's shared cultural heritage.
