Abstract
The nucleomorph-encoded and plastid-locallized protein ORF467 of Guillardia theta has been identified as SufD, a component of the SUF-System in plastids. A gene for SufS was identified in the nucleus genome of Guillardia theta, indicating a unique genetic compartmentalization of the SUF-System in cryptophytes. The characterization of a SufD (ATNAP6) Arabidopsis thaliana T-DNA mutant revealed defects in embryo-development, reduced root-growth, altered chloroplast ultrastructure and reduced chlorophyll-content. A GFP-fusion protein of ATNAP6 was localized in plastidic spots, this localization pattern was caused by a beta-helix protein domain of ATNAP6. The complex phenotypes of the ATNAP6 mutation were interpreted as a defect of a plastidic system for iron-sulfur cluster biogenesis in Arabidopsis thaliana.
