Abstract

The purpose of this study was to develop a method that improved the prediction of the crown diameters of unerupted permanent canines and premolars. A second objective of the current study was to compare the precision of other estimation methods. Presently 3 methods have proven clinical applicability. These are: the statistical, the radiological and the combined statis-tical-radiological methods. It appeared that statistical methods based on multiple linear regres-sion equations with 3 independent variables yield the same precision as the radiological method, and without additional radiographic images for the patient. The material of the present study consisted of a study group and a control group. The casts of both groups came from patients who were treated in the Department of Orthodontics at the University of Marburg-Germany. On these casts, the mesiodistal crown dimension of all the teeth – with the exception of the third molars – were measured with a digital caliper. The precision of 8 statistical methods were analysed at the study group level, by comparing the estimated values with the real ones. Among the analysed methods, the Bachmann equations showed the highest precision for orthodontic patients from Hessen-Germany. In order to improve the accuracy of the estimation, a new combination of 3 independent vari-ables for multiple linear regression equations has been searched for. The highest multiple corre-lation coefficient was computed for the combination of the teeth 42, 46 and 21. According to the results of the current study, by introducing in the regression equation one permanent tooth from the lateral segment (canine or premolar) the accuracy of the estimation improved considerably. Due to the variable character of the eruption sequence during the sec-ond transitional phase, the development of a regression modell for every eruption sequence was necessary. A computer program was developed for a better clinical applicability of the method. The precision improvement by using this method was confirmed on a control group.
