Abstract
Comparison of shear bond strength with orthodontic brackets is a common way
to determine bonding failure of different bonding agents.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the shear bond strength of the selfetching
agent Scotchbond Universal and compare it with two established
bonding agents (Transbond XT, Prompt L-Pop) of clinical orthodontic.
A total of sixty extracted human premolars were used in this Study. The teeth
were randomly divided into three groups.
The shear bond strength was measured using a testing machine „Zwick
1120.25“ (Fa. Zwick, Ulm, Deutschland). The statistical evaluation was done
with the programm „SPSS 21.0.0“ (IBM, Chicago, USA) for Mac.
The results validate that the shear bond strength is sufficiently strong enough
for clinical use. The highest shear bond strength score was reached by Prompt
L-Pop with 25,33 MPa. Transbond XT produced the highest mean bond
strength of 15,49 MPa. Analysis of the Shear bond strength indicated a normal
deviation and no differences in mean bond strength. The results of the Adhesiv
Remnant Index show no significant difference regarding the fracture behaviour
of all three bonding agents.
In consideration of the results, the use of Scotchbond Universal for bonding
metalbrackets to human enamel is advisable. Scotchbond Universal contains
the monomer MDP and according to the manufacturer is able to bond on metal
or ceramic surfaces without further pretreatment.
A follow up study is recommended to evaluate the potential of Scotchbond
Universal on preserving treated tooth and prosthetic restorations. Such a study
would further investigate, whether the shear bond strength is comparable to bonding agents which need additional chemical pretreatment of ceramic or
metal surfaces.
