Abstract

One part of this work was dealing with the immobilization of living bacteria in polymer fibers made by electrospinnung. Besides water soluble polymers special attention was given to the immobilization in water insoluble polymers like polystyrene and polyvinyl butyral. A hydrogel based system was developed, that allowed the combined processing of bacteria and polymers using organic solvents. Water resistant membranes consisting of electrospun fibers containing living bacteria could be obtained. Immobilized bacteria were able to convert dissolved substances from surrounding liquid media. A second part examined the coating of carrier materials with thin layers of elecrtospun polyamide fibers to convert them into filters for water purification purposes. Filters prepared in this manner were able to quantitatively remove bacteria from aqueous media.
