Abstract

Allergic disorders belong to the major health problems in the modern western countries. The exact pathomechanisms remain still unclear. Prenatal developement of allergies is a controversially discussed field. Therefore this study aimed to show, (1) whether allergen-specific IgE is detectable in cord blood (CB) (2) whether CB-IgE correlates with maternal/paternal IgE-profiles 24% of the investigated CB-samples were positive for allergen-specific IgE. Maternal and CB-IgE correlated for hens egg and cows milk allergens. This study could demontrate that allergic sensitization might already begin in utero and that maternal sensitization might have an influence on the developement of allergic diseases. The prospective design of the PASTURE-study will show whether our findings are associated with the developement of manifest allergic diseases later on in life.
