Abstract
The data of 1056 eyes with primary retinal
detachment who undergone pars plana vitrectomy or scleral
buckling between 1989 and 1997, were retrospectively reviewed.
We analyzed the retinal reattachment rate, postoperative visual
acuity, occurence of complications and postoperative
proliferative vitreoretinopathy.
The primary retinal
reattachment rate was 76%. After 0.7 reoperations in the
scleral buckling group and 1.2 reoperations in the vitrectomy
group an overall success rate of 90.9% was achieved.
After
the scleral buckling procedure, 85.5% of the operated eyes had
a constant or improved visual acuity, after vitrectomy the rate
of constant or better vision was 83.7%.
We found no
significant difference for the occurrence of choroidal
detachment, postoperative proliferative vitreoretinopathy or
scleral perforation in the two groups. There were more retinal
bleeding in the pars- plana- vitrectomy group, while eyes after
an encircling band suffered more often from a persistent
retinal detachment.
From the phakic eyes who underwent
vitrectomy, 73% developed cataract formation. The data of 1056 eyes with primary retinal
