Abstract

Nearly all plastics contain phthalates. This dissertation analyses the effect of di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) and mono(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (MEHP) on the pulmonary function of mice. A pulmonary function test using metacholin indicated a significant hyperreactivity of the respiratory system. There was no evidence of an increase of immunoglobuline in the serum. The alveolar lavage showed an increased concentration of NGF (nerv growth factor) and macrophages. The histological analysis could prove a higher expression of V-CAM (vascular cell adhesion molecule) in the arterioles and NGF in the bronchioles. It can be presumed that there is a development of hyperreactivity of the respiratory system due to the influence of phthalates and the higher concentration of V-CAM, NGF and macrophages.
