Abstract
Using the balloon-assisted puncture technique, we have successfully implanted a central venous catheter in 44 cases at
in a total of 45 interventions in patients
with complete occlusions of the central thoracic veins. There are currently
only a few studies evaluating novel methods for establishing
central venous access in patients with central venous obstructions.
The retrospective data analysis of 45 interventions in 36 patients treated between
2014 and 2021 at Vivantes Klinikum im Friedrichshain Berlin,
currently represents the largest patient population treated with the balloon-assisted
puncture technique.
We found a success rate of 98% for this technique.
The rate of periinterventional ‘minor complications’ was 2%, no case of a
‘major complication’ was found. This technique can therefore be categorised as a safe
method.

In summary, balloon-assisted puncture for the placement of a CVC in
complete occlusion of central veins is a safe, reproducible, cost-effective
and flexible method.
In future, further studies with a larger number of cases are required to better assess the
success rate and complications of this method.
