Abstract

After a successful endodontic treatment the tooth has an increased risk of fracturing, because the preparation has led to a huge loss of tooth structure (Tang et al. 2010). A following prosthetic restoration can make it necessary to implement a root canal post to enhance the retention provided by the tooth (Goodacre 1994). The aim of the study was to show, whether the tooth age had an impact on the bond strength on the root canal post. 60 extracted teeth with straight root curvature were first sorted into age groups and then cleaned and x-rayed. After decoronation and defining a root canal length of 10 mm with a working length of 8 mm the roots were prepared with the F360 file system to ISO 60. During preparation process the roots were only irrigated with distilled water and then dried with paper points. The 60 teeth were then divided in 6 randomized groups (n = 10). • group 1: Core X Flow / young • group 2: Core X Flow / middle-aged • group 3: Core X Flow / old • group 4: Smart Cem 2 / young • group 5: Smart Cem 2 / middle-aged • group 6: Smart Cem 2 / old The silicoating and so roughening of the spreader surface by using Cojet increased its grip. The attachment of the posts was carried out under official instructions. The ensemble of pin and tooth was stored in a thermal cabinet at 37°, under the exclusion of UV rays, until the attachment material had fully set. The root canal post was pulled out of the root canal with the Zwick universal testing machine which simultaneously measured the bond strength in MPa. This happened via the maximum force (Fmax) required to release the adhesive bond. The statistical evaluation of the results was done with SPSS. Significant differences were found between the luting materials Core X Flow and Smart Cem 2 in the “middle-aged” group (ANOVA, p = 0.020*). Conclusion Within the limits of this in vitro study, it can be concluded that tooth age had no significant effect on the bond strength between the root canal dentin and the luting material.
