Abstract
a. „are self-adhesive filling materials ready for practice?”
In order to answer this question, we compared the bond strength of a self-adhesive filling material with other adhesive systems.
b. Material and methods
For the implementation of the experimental study, 20 human, caries free wisdom teeth have been prepared with an occlusal cavity (L : 4 mm, W : 3 mm, D : 4 mm) and randomized in five groups per 4 teeth. The cavities were pretreated and filled as follows: Group I: Syntac TE + Empress direkt, Group II: SAF in 2x 2mm layers, Group III: SAF as Lining + EcuSphere, Group IV: Luxabond + EcuSphere, Group V: Teco + EcuSphere.
Afterwards the roots of the teeth were removed and the teeth crowns were sawn up into 0,9 mm x 0,9 mm sticks. The produced sticks were stored for three months in sterile water at 37°C and then fixed onto a testing apparatus in order to measure the bond strength between the dentin and the filling material using the microtensile test. The adhesive strength (MPa) was calculated on the basis of the measured tensile force (N) and the surface area of the stick (mm²) as follows: MPa = N/mm². After the microtensile investigation, the fracture sites were examined using an SEM in order to determine the failure mode.
c. Results:
Already during the preparation of the slices and sticks, it came to filling loss in group II and III, so that in group II no sticks were available for the microtensile test. In determining the tensile force, it can be seen that there is a significant difference (p > 0,05) between the control groups Gr. I: 18,2 ± 5,5 MPa; Gr. IV: 31,1 ± 7,7 MPa; Gr. V: 25,6 ± 8,1 MPa and the test groups Gr. II: 0 MPa; Gr.III: 8,145 ± 11MPa.
In conclusion, the tested self-adhering filling material is not ready to be put into practice, because it has proven to be neither accurate as a self-adhering filling material nor as a lining.
