Abstract

A permanent bacteria-tight filling of the access cavity including a hermetic seal of the pulp chamber floor following obturation of the root canal system is the aim of endodontic treatment. Only this procedure allows the prevention of bacterial invasion of the root canal system over time and subsequently avoids a bacterial recolonisation of the periapex. During the resent years adhesive restorative materials became the material of choice for coronal restorations of endodontically treated teeth. Nevertheless, regarding the sealing efficiency of these materials there remain several questions unanswered. The present study aimed to assess the efficiency of coronal seals following obturation to prevent bacterial ingress by means of a long-term bacterial leakage analysis in vitro over 365 days.
