Abstract
In this study on the basis of historical-archival cultural anthropology, the qualitative content of the source church register is discussed and contextualized, taking into account the phenomena of death and collective fear at the time of the Thirty Years' War. The focus is on examining church registers in phases of extreme mortality in the Marburg region, which could be determined in particular in the years 1635 and 1636. Within this selected period, case studies are shown that depict life in times of crisis and epidemics. The study offers detailed insights into the area surrounding the Thirty Years' War and the associated burdens on the predominantly rural population.
