Abstract

The retrospective analysis of the frequency of proteinuria under the treatment of juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) with sulphasalazine is the topic of the present study. In this connection two questions were defined: 1. Does proteinuria occur significantly more often under the treatment of JIA with sulphasalazine? 2. Is there an higher activity of disease among those patients who showed a proteinuria? These questions were brought up by the discrepancies between literature and clinical observations. For the present study the data of 160 patients of the German centre of rheumatology for children and adolescents were recorded and analyzed. The examination of the results in all gives the impression that the taking of sulphasalazine is most likely responsible for the occurence of proteinuria among the patients of this study. Decisive for this conclusion is the significant difference between the groups “sulphasalazine yes“ and “sulphasalazine no“ and the decrease of protein excretion after discontinuing sulphasalazine therapy. In oppositon to this no connection between elevated proteine excretion and high disease activity could be detected.
