Abstract
Scope:
This study investigates different methods for estimating the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) in children and adolescents in comparison with single-injection inulin clearance. In addition to inulin clearance, 10 different GFR methods were applied in 27 patients and evaluated: short-time creatinine clearance, twenty-four-hour creatinine clearance, the Schwartz formula as well as determination of cystatin C. The creatinine was determined by three different tests: the enzymatic methods Creatinine Plus and Ektachem as well as the conventional Jaffé method.
Findings and conclusion:
The study reveals that none of the investigated methods can be considered as reliable for estimating the GFR. However, the Schwartz formula determined by Jaffé provides the highest consistency with the inulin clearance.
