Abstract

Faces represent exceptional visual stimuli for man and can be recognized as such rapidly and reliably. Still it is not figured out to which criterions this rapid face detection proceeds. The Viola-Jones object detection algorithm represents one of the most efficient options to detect faces mechanically. It is based on contrasts between various rectangles, so called "capillary attributes". In two experiments probands had to move their eyes after short-time presentation of two stimuli (2Oms)as fast as possible to the figure which represented a face in their perception. Failed detections of the Viola-Jones algorithm ("halluzinated faces") attracted more attention than other objects. Furthermore "halluzinated faces" distracted more from real faces than images without failed detection. This investigation demonstrates that failed detections of the Viola-Jones algorithm are rather percepted as faces by probands. Whether this is caused by capillary attributes or rather by correlated attributes could not be resolved concludingly.
